Whenever you assemble a "Top 10" list it's always opinionated and ephemeral. Opinionated in that the quality scale and ratings come from from an individual or group with a very subjective view of things. I have things that I consider important points when it comes to determining accuracy of replica watches that someone else might consider trivial for example.

It's also ephemeral in that the industry is constantly changing. What's on the top of the pile today may end up on the bottom of the heap tomorrow. I say this all to mean don't shoot the messenger. :) If this list doesn't include what you envision it to need to be a comprehensive list please email me. I'll be happy to create updated lists as time goes by.

The criteria for this list is simple: Be as accurate of a copy of the genuine watch as possible without modifications or factory parts. I also spread the coverage of the list to include as many brands as possible. While some brands are replicated more accurately than others, I felt a broader approach was a better example.

	Rolex Explorer I The Rolex Explorer I is a simple yet effective design. Its simplicity makes it easier to replicate than other Rolex models. Unlike the Rolex Submariner that has crown guards and a cyclops date magnifier, this design lacks the elements that are the most difficult to replicate.
	Chopard Gran Turismo XL The GT XL is a design that is based on a ETA movement as a genuine watch, which makes it easier to replicate. The crystal and cyclops are highly accurate, as is the date wheel and caseback on the higher-end examples of this replica. There are slight inaccuracies on the dial (the C H O P A R D is not spaced exactly the same, for example) and stickers instead of engraving on the rotor, but both of these are difficult to spot unless you know what to look for.
	Panerai Ferrari Series Most Panerai replicas are easy to spot because of certain common flaws: Incorrect or ill-fitting crown guards, canon pinion too short, bad date wheel or cyclops, etc. The Ferrari Panerai replicas avoid most of these flaws making them the most accurate Panera replicas on the market.
	Grah am Chronofighter Oversize The Graham Chronofighter is an odd choice to replicate, yet the replica manufacturer went to great lengths to ensure accuracy. The metal quality is high-grade, and all the pieces have a "genuine" quality to them. Look for a blue-ish tint to the Anti-reflective coating and some puckering around the hour markers on the dial. Still, this is a highly accurate replica and purchasing a Steelfish on the secondary market should be done with caution.
	Bell & Ross BR01-92 The Bell & Ross BR01 and BR03 series are some of my favorite watches. The simple case design has lent itself to being replicated almost since the watch was available. Up until recently the replica BR01s were easy to spot because of fake case screws on the caseback. Recent counterfeit BRs have real screws in place of the fake screws making them more difficult to spot. Look for poor luminosity on the dial and hands and cheaper quality bands and rubber straps. To make it tick again, you have to wind it for 10 - 12 rounds by turning the crown clockwise. To re-adjust the Day or Date back correctly, it depends on whether the crown is the one adjusting or it is recessed or button pusher. You can then adjust accordingly. For the crown, pull it out lightly once to adjust Date/Day (Most watches are like that). If you pull out the crown out twice, it will adjust Time. If it is a screw in crown, unscrew the crown anti-clockwise and follow the same instructions to adjust Date/Day and Time.

Q3. HOW DO I SET THE TIME?

A3. To set time, you need to unscrew crown anti-clockwise direction if you have a screw-in crown watch. You need to softly and slowly pull the crown out a little bit. The best way to do this is to use first and second finger and use finger knuckle as a lever in order to pull the crown out with as little force as possible. You can feel a little click! Now you can set the time by turning it anti-clockwise. This would turn the minute-hour hands forward until you set the right time. When time is set, push the button back and screw the crown clockwise for a few rounds to ensure it is screwed back tight.

Q4. HOW DO I SET THE GMT & LOCAL TIME?

A4. GMT means Dual Time Zone and it usually use a 24-hour clock instead of a 12-hour clock we normally use. GMT can be set with two time zones. A local minute-hour hand time and a GMT (sometimes red) arrow second time zone.

To adjust time, please follow the instructions below:

1. Unwind the crown anti-clockwise softly and slowly until it loosen up. There are two steps of pulling out the button stem. Do not exert too much force here and please make sure you do it lightly and carefully.

2. STEP ONE is for setting the GMT second time zone. STEP TWO is for setting the local time. Pull one-step out is to set GMT and date by winding the button clockwise and anticlockwise respectively. Pull one more step is for setting local time. Pushing the crown inward one step will bring it back to GMT setting. Pushing it two steps will bring it back to normal position and you can wind it back clockwise while pushing it back softly to secure the crown onto the watchcase.

3. Set local time FIRST and then GMT SECOND time zone. When you set local time, GMT time will also be changed at the same time

Q5. I HAVE A QUARTZ VERSION (BATTERY OPERATED) WATCH, WHEN DO I NEED TO CHANGE THE BATTERY?

A5. A new battery will normally last for two years. Depending on time of the last replacement, you would probably need to change battery within two years.

Q6. I HAVE A WATCH WITH DATE, HOW DO I CHANGE THE DATE?

A6. To change date and time you need to do the following. If you have a screw-in crown like a Rolex, you need to turn the crown anti-clockwise for a few rounds until the crown is loose. Then you need to pull the crown out softly by using your thumb’s nail and first finger’s nail. Please do this softly to avoid breaking the stem. You should feel a click here. There are two steps when you pull the crown out. The first step is for setting the date (and Day if you have a Rolex Day-Date). The second step is for setting the local time (see Q2 and A2 for details). You can only set Date forward by turning the crown in one direction. When you are done with setting date and time, push back the crown and wind it clockwise for a few times to lock it.

Q7. WHAT IS SCREW-IN CROWN? HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?

A7. A Screw-in crown will lock into the case of the watch when you turn the crown clockwise toward the watch case. It will tighten when it is screwed tight. Most Rolex watches use Screw-in crown. When you want to wind your watch, you have to un-lock the crown by turning the button anti-clockwise until you see the crown comes out of the watch a little bit, about 1.0 to 1.5 mm. Do not force the crown to come out cause it will easily break the stem link with the watch. When the crown comes out, you can then wind it, adjust time, date, day just like other watches. To lock it, slowly turn it and push it toward the watch until it is locked tight. NO need to apply extra force after it is tight! For most other non screw-in crown watches, you just wind it, adjust time, date, day without the need to un-screw the crown.

Q8. WHAT IS A RECESSED PUSHER? HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM THE PUSHER BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT RECESSED?

A8. Recessed pushers are button that are designed in a way that the button is inside the watch body, mostly for appearance purpose. Many times, there are too many push buttons on the watch already and making recessed pushers will help to save space and makes it more desirable in looks. Usually, recessed pushers are for setting date, year or day, etc. Use a ball-point pen to push the recessed pusher all-the-way and release fully will make it change accordingly. Repeat the process until you set the right information. Do not push half way or release half way, it will sometimes cause the gear to change half way and make it show the wrong information and it might damage other mechanical parts in the watch’s movement.

Rubber straps on luxury watches was once seen as oddities have come a long way. The pre-Columbian Indians of Latin America were among the first to recognize the advantages of rubber, which they called "caoutchouc," a term that in their language means "tree's tears." This versatile polymer, which the indigenous peoples of the Amazon region used in their daily lives, has numerous industrial applications today, including its growing role in the watchmaking business. Many of the top quality replica watches use the same rubber as the designer originals. The history of the rubber strap for wristwatches is closely associated with the Italian businessman Carlo Crocco and his Hublot watch brand. Similar difficulties had confronted Triumph Adler, the German manufacturer of typewriters, when the company padded the keys of its typewriters with a pleasantly soft rubber coating that felt comfortable against the typist's fingertips. Unfortunately, tests soon showed that perspiration destroyed the rubber. The specialists ultimately succeeded in developing a skin-friendly formula that also had the necessary resistance to aging, ozone and ultraviolet light. In ensuing years, the material underwent continual improvements so many that the rubber strap of a wristwatch seldom needs replacement, except in exceptional instances. The lifespan of a rubber strap is now equal to that of a metal bracelet, yet rubber straps cost only half as much, and weigh only one-third as much, as bracelets. The black rubber strap that Hublot used when it launched its watch in 1980 was very thin (1.3 mm) and perfumed with natural vanilla from Madagascar. A quarter of a century later, Hublot watches are still worn on rubber straps, but the vanilla scent has largely fallen out of favor. Contemporary rubber straps are more likely to exude a mild aroma similar to that of a car tire. Their thickness has increased over the years: a polymer strap nowadays is typically four to five millimeters thick and thus relatively heavy. Most Hublot straps are still black, and use organic pigments to achieve their ebony coloration rather than sooty lampblack. The problem with lampblack involves the discharge of tiny particles that can soil the skin and clothing; it is added to the organic pigments only to make extremely dark blacks. Non-pigmented rubber is almost colorless, so it can be manufactured in nearly any color. Pure white color can be achieved with the addition of titanium dioxide to the mixture, but orders for this are rare; most watch companies prefer their "white" straps to be slightly off-white. Flanges protruding along their sides can be removed either with a laser or by tumbling the components together with glass spherules cooled with liquid nitrogen to a temperature of minus 200° C (-328° F), which causes the rubber to become very hard and brittle. Sandblasting, which can be used to achieve a perfectly matte surface, is also done at this temperature. In the final stage of the process, the strap components are meticulously washed and dried. In the case of Hublot, a laser brands the inner surface of each one with an inset brand logo. Hublot had a near monopoly on rubber straps for many years, but in the late 1990s, other brands began to include them in their collections, from modern ones, like Bulgari and Swatch, to acutely tradition conscious ones like Cartier and Patek Philippe. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in deep trouble. The "Terminator" turned-candidate couldn't get his message about restoring California's failing, near-bankrupt economy to resonate. Buffeted by squabbles in his inner circle, and not offering many specifics on issues such as taxation and illegal immigration, he got off to a confused, half-baked start in his campaign to unseat incumbent Gray Davis in California's 2003 gubernatorial recall election. One critical problem, according to the Los Angeles Times in Oct. 2003, was that the advisers around Schwarzenegger seemed to be star struck, allowing him to campaign like the movie star that he was rather than the politician he had become. What was needed was a more focused, hard-hitting approach, a compelling theme led by a single-minded, take-no-prisoners strategist. Schwarzenegger found that game-changer in, of all places, the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Desperately needing someone who would bring no-nonsense clarity to his muddled message of reform, he reached out to media consultant Mike Murphy, who had spearheaded John McCain's 2000 "Straight Talk Express" presidential bid, Oliver North's failed 1994 Senate campaign, and Jeb Bush's successful hid for the Florida governorship in 1998. Murphy was then working for an opposition leader in Tblisi, on a very profitable consulting gig, but luring him away from blinis and borscht didn't prove to be difficult. Relishing the action of challenging, hand-to-hand political combat, this maestro of attack ads admits he is addicted to what he calls the "circus" of American politics. "This business is funny; campaigns, along with being amplifiers, also have an awe-inspiring beauty, especially when they have coherence and consistency," says Murphy, who's been an informal adviser to McCain during his 2008 presidential contest against Barack Obama, which was nearing the home stretch as of press time. BORN IN MICHIGAN and educated at Georgetown University, Murphy has been in politics a long time, starting in 1984 when he was asked by a Bridgehampton, NY congressman to do commercials for his troubled campaign. Today, he is co-founder of DC Navigators, a nationally known firm that specializes in lobbying, media buying and strategic communications. He's also become a well-known TV pundit, appearing regularly on MSNBC and "Meet the Press." Over a meal this past summer in, appropriately, a Bridgehampton diner, the 46-year-old strategist criticizes the McCain camp for badly handling the campaign's message this past summer and reserves praise for his opponent's operation. "Time management is crucial," he says. "[McCain's advisors] would love to have the summer back, since time is the most precious commodity in a campaign. I've said on TV that the Obama campaign is elegant, [and] mechanically beautiful. It has a definite architecture, much like a finely made watch." He adds, "I love getting the trivia out of the way, interpreting where the voters are, and creating the story. Then I implement it with advertising." Before taking on Schwarzenegger's California campaign, Murphy had used his skills to help other Republican candidates reach the governor's mansion — Tommy Thompson (Wisconsin, 1987); John Engler (Michigan, 1991); and Christine Todd Whitman (New Jersey, 1994). The key to success, he says, "was to narrow the focus of their campaigns — control the message. A campaign is like a caterpillar. I enjoy getting all the legs doing the same thing." Sure enough, Murphy got the meandering caterpillar of the Schwarzenegger campaign on track. Even if his tactics jarred a few egos, and had critics painting him as a political attack dog, he nonetheless crafted a strong message of change that became the rationale behind Schwarzenegger's candidacy. Drawing on Murphy's strategic ad buys, his adroit stage crafting of messages to the press, and the "Ask Arnold" events he arranged, Schwarzenegger slugged his way to victory in the manner of one of his cinematic alter egos. Murphy, according to political consultant Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, "made Arnold behave more like a candidate." In the process, the two men discovered a bond that went well beyond politics — namely, a shared passion for fine watches. SCHWARZENEGGER told the Sacramento Bee, "Mike is the best, whether he's writing a great opening line for a press conference or knowing the history of every political campaign. It's all about selling what you got — and nobody is better at selling than Mike." Murphy returns the compliment. "Arnold is a great product," he says. "If I couldn't sell him, I shouldn't have been in politics. Working with him is like being a Mercedes salesman in Dubai ... or an A. Lange & Sohne salesman in Singapore." Murphy recalls enthusiastically jumping into one of the governor's two Chevy Suburbans, and speeding towards the Audemars Piguet shop on 57th Street in midtown Manhattan. "We jumped out of the Suburban, busted into this place, with all of the Audemars brass looking on, and he said, `Let's go into the vault; we've got to get Murphy the discount,"' he recalls. "He was putting the squeeze on them, in a comic way, of course. They found a stripped-down, steel Royal Oak. He yelled, 'No, no, no — let's find something with a lot of diamonds.' He really put on a show to tease the Audemars guys. It was terrific." AN AFFABLE, WITTY STORYTELLER who laces his anecdotes with political punditry, Murphy was a favorite guest of the late Tim Russert on NBC's "Meet the Press." Still greatly shaken by his death, Murphy credits Russert for giving him his start on television, and fondly remembers him as a fellow watch fanatic. "[Democratic pundit) James Carville is a Lange nut," Murphy reveals, "and after Russert got curious about timepieces a few years ago, he, too, became a fanatic." Murphy himself is partial to, in his words, "big, dinky watches." His favorite brands include Audemars Piguet, particularly the Royal Oak Offshore with a rubber bezel; Jaeger-LeCoultre (he owns four, including a Reverso and a stainless-steel Master Geographic) and IWC (his collection includes a titanium GST Chronograph and a bright, orange-and-blue Aquatimer Jacques Cousteau divers' watch). "These companies have a purity, a coherence of message," he says of his most admired brands. "They don't try to be too much to too many people. A company like Jaeger is very integrated, elegant. I like to see a certain architecture, a perfect form." It's easy to surmise from such statements that watches mean more to Murphy than their investment potential. Timepieces such as his Lange 1 (whose big date window and off-center design he describes admiringly as "quirky") and his JLC Re-verso Grand Taille are a means of communication, symbolic pieces of art that spur camaraderie between him and like-minded aficionados. In the "Meet the Press" studio, he can talk the talk with the likes of Carville and Patek enthusiast Robert Shrum, a former adviser to John Kerry and other Democrats. Regardless of their opposing political views, they have been his band of watch brothers. "When I showed Carville the Jacques Cousteau, he was like a barracuda, zooming in to see it," Murphy says with a chuckle. However, even Murphy has self-imposed limits on his watch habit. "I was really interested in getting the IWC Big Pilot," he reveals. "But it's too damn much money: $30,000 for platinum. I almost bought the Ulysse Nardin Freak. I did get a white-gold Svend Andersen with a second time zone. But there's a point where I have to step back. I'm doing okay financially, but I'm trying to keep the watch thing under control. It's hard." INTERESTINGLY, some of Murphy's other recent difficulties have come not from his political adversaries but his purported allies. Stiff opposition by some McCain advisers derailed a potential offer for him to work on the senator's presidential campaign. Despite his successes, Murphy has some enemies in the Republican Party —establishment foes that have been irritated by his irreverence and independence. That annoyance clearly came into play this past summer. Conservative columnist William Kristol hinted in The New York Times that Murphy might join McCain's then-rudderless campaign as chief strategist to give it "a clear theme." Kristol acknowledged such a hire might be risky, admitting "the current McCain campaign is chock full of GOP establishment types, many of whom aren't great fans of the irreverent Murphy." But Kristol was still confident that Murphy would overcome this resistance and be brought onboard. Kristol was wrong. "I was found to be an unpalatable choice," Murphy says, referring to the clique of McCain campaign advisors who allegedly stonewalled the candidate's efforts to bring him aboard. " 'Offer' is a tricky word," Murphy says. "[McCain and I] are friends. We talk all the time. He asked me to come help the campaign. But campaign consultants are like pastry chefs: you get too many in the kitchen and it's a big knife fight. "There were some issues about what I would do, and what the guys already there would do. I'm a fanatic about control. I thought the campaign was a mess, that it needed a lot of help. I wanted to change a lot of stuff in the campaign that I don't think they felt needed changing. That's why we didn't agree. I don't think McCain wanted to fight his own people to bring me in. I decided that wasn't a good idea. So I pulled the plug and took an offer with NBC News to do more commentary during this cycle." One result of the decision is that Murphy now has more time to focus on hobbies, such as collecting automobiles. Describing himself as "a Detroit guy," Murphy has a sentimental attachment to a Dodge K Car that he purchased in 1982. On the higher end, he owns a Mercedes 190E Interceptor with a Chrysler power train, and a Maserati Mistral two-door from the 1960s that is currently giving him problems. "It's at the shop; I'm having the engine rebuilt," Murphy says of the car. "With an American engine, I know my way around, but unfortunately I'll probably wind up selling a watch to pay for this thing." Murphy might then sell the Maserati to buy the car he really craves, a Citroen SM. "I've talked to Jay Leno about it," he says (the "Tonight Show" host is a well-known car freak). "His website has great material on the Citroen. He works on all his cars. I can only work on them in a mild way. I just don't have the Leno 'bug' to really do it." Another hobby, one Murphy takes seriously, is screenwriting. He started work on a script that he refers to as a dark comedy after wrapping up Schwarzenegger's 2005 campaign. He's also considering doing a coffee-table book that would feature his own photography from assorted campaigns. While his firm is involved in political races abroad, he himself has little interest for the time being in running another state or national race. "I have an informal voice in the McCain strategizing," he reveals. "That's all I need." Murphy is still addicted to evaluating polls, making ad hominem arguments against Democrats' policies, and offering punditry. "The gun issue was pivotal for many years, and Democrats are on the wrong side of guns. On election night I'll be watching the industrial Midwest —Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In a close election it will come down to whether McCain can carry Michigan and Ohio, and maybe Pennsylvania." Describing his role in this historic election — reporting from the sidelines rather than assisting his good friend McCain — Murphy puts on a brave face. "I'm happy getting up at dawn to do the `Today' show," he says. "Being a pundit isn't bad. It's a lot easier than running a campaign."

The History of Movement Manufacturing

We talk a lot about ebauches when we discuss movements these days – the movement kits that Breitling and other manufacturers use. Technically there are a couple of different terms that we tend to use interchangeably, but which are distinctly different.

An ebauche or blank is technically not a complete movement. It is the bridges and plates plus the drive train of wheels and pinions that drive the hands. It does not contain the escapement or balance spring, and it does not contain the mainspring and barrel.

If you add those pieces then what you technically have is a chablon – still in kit form. I’ll use those definitions here, and I’ll try and remember to distinguish in other posts going forward, it’s just hard to break a habit!

If you go back to 1745, the city of Geneva published some statutes on watchmaking – rules and regulations if you like, and at that point one of the statutes actually forbade movement manufacturers from establishing their businesses inside the city walls of Geneva unless they could demonstrate a particular quality level.

It was clearly understood that what was then known as the watch industry was the production of cases, dials, etc and the decorative finishing of a mechanical device produced by suppliers. The movement was completely irrelevant to the perceived quality of the watch at this time, buyers looked for the right name, the right material and the right finish.

Things started to change in 1770, but ironically things actually got worse. A gentleman by the name of Frederic Japy started producing movement blanks or ebauches using the latest and greatest technology available at the time. Ebauches were already a low cost part of the entire process, and now Japy was producing them in unheard of numbers – by 1813 he was turning out 300,000 a year. For the watch manufacturers this reinforced their belief that there was no talent here – it was just a necessary part to enable the watchmaker to demonstrate his art.

As a result of this huge increase in supply, prices for ebauches crashed and Japy’s success in volume production threatened his firm’s survival. In large part this was because the high end watchmakers hadn’t adapted to the changes in supply numbers – they were still using traditional hand worked methods for finishing movements which meant that they couldn’t consume the numbers of ebauches that were being produced. As a result the market became flooded and movements were being sold at a loss just to keep turnover going. Of course this just meant that the profit margin for the watch companies that used the ebauches increased still further.

Nothing much changed in the next hundred years or so – there were lower grade watch companies who were consuming some of the excess supply, but the inherent disparity between the high end watch maker and the ‘industrial’ movement producers remained.

During the first world war many movement manufacturers changed focus and used their industrial equipment to produce war materiel, especially ammunition. After the first world war, they again started producing ebauches and once more the market saw glut conditions.

There were some attempts made to unite the movement manufacturers to address these issues – the Societe Suisse des Fabriques d’Ebauches et de Finissages in 1917 and the Federation Horlogere in 1924. Neither were particularly successful in making any changes or in uniting the industry however.

Things started changing in 1926 with the three largest ebauches manufacturers of the time, together accounting for 80% of the market, agreeing to what was effectively a merger. Although they decided to remain independent in operation they created a holding company that would own the three firms. That holding company was Ebauches SA.

They didn’t simply stop there though, over the next few years Ebauches SA tried to buy as many movement manufacturers as they could – both independent firms and the ebauches divisions of more diversified companies. By the late 1920s Ebauches SA controlled around 90% of the market, although the individual firms still retained creative independence. What Ebauches SA offered was economic control. Even companies that formed the 10% of manufacturers that were not controlled by Ebauches SA worked closely with the company in an attempt to ensure that the movement manufacturers had a voice and received a fair price for their work.

Things were starting to look up for the industry, and then came the 1929 stock market crash and the depression of the 1930s. Immediately the companies not controlled by Ebauches SA started selling movements for any price – just to try and survive. It was clear though that these small firms would not be able to survive on their own, and in 1932 a company called Allgemeine Schweizer Uhrenindustrie AG (ASUAG) came into existence. This company brought together most of the remaining independent movement manufacturers, as well as the producers of mainsprings, barrels and escapements – the things that turned ebauches into chablons.

Ebauches SA also acquired some more movement manufacturers including some of the big names – Eta, Unitas, Eterna et al. In the coming decades this rationalization continued and by the end of the second world war there were some 50 companies under the Ebauches SA umbrella.

So 50 years ago Breitling movements came from Ebauches SA – remember that.

Remember that all of these firms still operated independently, and this didn’t change. In the 1970s, as we all know, the industry came under tremendous pressure from the influx of Japanese quartz movements, and many of the Ebauches SA member companies failed to survive, while those that did acquired the assets of other members. By 1983, the entire industry was struggling to survive and further consolidation became necessary. As a result Ebauches SA and ASUAG merged. By that time ASUAG was already in talks with a watch manufacturer called Societe Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogere or SIHH which owned Omega, so at the end of 1983 that company too joined the combined company.

ASUAG and SIHH had been in financial trouble for years and Swiss bankers had asked a consulting firm to oversee a liquidation of the companies in 1979. That consulting firm was headed by a Lebanese gentleman called Nicholas Hayek (some of you will now know where this is going).

In 1985 the group was renamed Societe Suisse de Microelectronique et d’horlogerie or SMH and in 1986 Nicholas Hayek became Chairman and CEO.

And that’s pretty much the story – 150 years of chaos and then 80 years of struggling for acceptance and stability through Ebauches SA, culminating in Nicholas Hayek’s involvement and his stewardship through the mechanical renaissance. His son still runs the company today.

Oh, just one more thing.....

In 1998 Ebauches SA, then called SMH, went through one further name change.

Not much to say here, the (classic black) Rolex Submariner is THE best known divewatch on this planet, much copied design and leading in his class, the Rolex Sea-Dweller is the Submariner's bigger brother which has a few more innovations built into it for specific professional use. Both come with a classic black dial and the Oyster bracelet and have a date-feature. Both models use the Rolex cal. 3135 as a proven and reliable workhorse.

Differences, in short:

- The Submariner has a cyclops, the Dweller doesn't.

- The Sea-Dweller has a He-valve, the Submariner doesn't.

- The Sea-Dweller is around 2mm higher that the Submariner, due to the thicker crystal, case and caseback.

- The Sea-Dweller is rated for 1220 meters, the Submariner for 300 meters.

- The dial from the Sea-Dweller is 1mm smaller than on the Submariner.

And it IS the only watch seriously used in a professional environment, commercial divers do not use a Omega, TAG or IWC for the job. But after a while the magic wears off and things like comfort and looks take over, that's the moment you may realized that the Submariner is the better watch to have and to wear. What are 'gray market' watches?

There are many places where you can buy fine watches. The most important concept to understand before making a purchase decision is the difference between gray-market versus authorized dealers and how that affects the price, warranty coverage, and resale of a watch you purchase.

All genuine Omega Watches, Rolex Watches and other fine watches come from the maker's factory. The maker only sells them to authorized dealers and distributors. To establish and maintain an authorized dealer relationship and volume discounts, authorized dealers must make large initial investments in inventory and continue to purchase minimum quantities of watches over time. This can involve minimum initial and ongoing inventory purchase requirements as high as US$ 250,000 for a single dealer to carry each major brand.

For smaller dealers, this often forces them to purchase more watches than they can sell directly to their customers and to hold in inventory an excessive amount of merchandise of a single brand. So some authorized dealers sell off at wholesale prices the surplus to the 'gray market' of unauthorized dealers--who then sell the watches at heavier discounts than authorized dealers are allowed to. This is not explicitly illegal, but it usually violates the authorized dealer or resellers agreements with the manufacturer.

The manufacturers, to protect their authorized dealers from the heavier discount offered to the consumer by the non-authorized dealers, refuse to provide in-warranty service on these watches. Unfortunately, this policy usually ends up hurting the uninformed consumer more than it protects the authorized dealers. The reason this policy is an ineffective deterrent is that the customer needs to know this before they buy the watch. But only a small percentage of buyers know this before a purchase. Many do not discover this until after they have a problem and are refused in-warranty service by the manufacturer or an authorized repair center. At that point, the customer sees the manufacturer as the bad guy for refusing to honor a warranty on a watch the customer feels they bought legitimately. You see how that works.

How can I tell if a watch is gray market?

Gray market watches are genuine watches from the original manufacturer. They are not fakes or factory seconds. The only thing that makes them different is that they passed through an unauthorized dealer or reseller on the way to you. (Though occasionally, some less ethical gray market dealer may also sell old stock, returns, or refurbished watches as if they were 'new' merchandise.)

Here are probable signs of a gray market watch:

Is the dealer's published price more than 20% off the manufacturer's listed retail price?
Is the manufacturer's warranty card missing or not stamped with an authorized dealer stamp?
Is the serial number missing off the watch?

What does it mean to me if I buy a gray market watch?

Gray market fine watches are typically available at discounts of 30-40%, compared to the maximum 20% discount the authorized dealers are usually contractually allowed to give you.
Note that there are legitimate cases where an authorized dealer may give you more than 20% off current list price on a fine watch. When a dealer has stock they acquired before a manufacturer's price increase, when the watch is a returned or clearance item, or when they bend the rules when really desperate for end-of-month sales (particularly if they have a very large amount of returns after Christmas).
While some gray market dealers are very honest and forthright about what they are selling to you, others may not mention that their merchandise is gray market or make it clear that you do not have a manufacturer's warranty on the watch.
Your manufacturer's warranty card will not be stamped with an authorized dealer's name--or you may get no card at all. In either case, you have no valid manufacturer's warranty coverage. Watches described as having 'open papers' means the warranty has not been validated by an authorized dealer.
If the dealer includes a warranty of their own, it will only be good through them--it will not be honored by any other dealer or the manufacturer's authorized service centers. For this you must trust the reputation and stability of that dealer to repair your watch within the warranty period. Otherwise, any repair will be at your expense.
Some gray market watches have had the serial number removed from the outside of the case (but not the inside) to prevent the manufacturer from tracing it to the authorized dealer that sold it to the gray market. See the following section for more information on watches that have had their serial numbers removed.

Ultimately, the difference is whether you are willing to risk warranty, resale, and other problems in return for saving another 10-20% off the cost of the watch. In my option it is better to have the warranty.

The Master Tourbillon watch comes in three metals: platinum in a limited- edition of 200, retailing for $300,000; rose gold at an initial first-edition of 500, retailing for $47,500; and the steel version in an open-ended run, retailing for $39,000. Diamond bezels are in the works for future introductions. The Master Tourbillon's regulator is titanium and accompanies a highly precise self-winding movement that operates at 28,800 vibrations an hour. It also features an entirely new balance design—with considerably large dimensions— and an inertia of 11.5mg x cm2. These specifications created various challenges, which the company worked to overcome. First, the tourbillon's cage, weighing in at 0.33g, owes its lightweight characteristics to its titanium alloy construction. Titanium's hardness, however, can be tough to work, and Jaeger-LeCoultre went to great lengths to polish and sand the elements on the cage without compromising function. Giving further testimony to its technological prowess, Jaeger-LeCoultre patented a date mechanism that can be adjusted in both directions and jumps between these two dates to avoid obstruction. "We make all our own movements in our fully integrated company, and the tourbillon in general is our most popular because you can view it," says Wolfgang. "So we added this additional design element to never block it; an added complication that we built in." Celebrating the jet-setting nature of its customers, the Master Tourbillon watch features a functional and decorative dual time mechanism. At the upper part of the dial, a 24-hour indicator provides the current time adorned with a rayonnant motif to illustrate when the sun is in the sky. It is no wonder, then, that the senior executives at Audemars Piguet took some heat for launching a steel watch with a steel bracelet for the price of a gold watch. The Royal Oak watch cost SF 3650 (around $900). However, despite the mockery of its rivals, Audemars Piguet's bold gamble paid off. Today, the 35- year-old watch is regarded as one of the milestones in wristwatch history. Indirectly, its name dates to the 17th century, and the oak tree in which the future King Charles II took refuge from Oliver Cromwell's pursuing soldiers. More immediately, the watch owes its moniker — and in a way, also its design — less to the tree than to the ship named after it, built for the Royal Navy 200 years later. A total of four ships have borne the venerable name of "Royal Oak" but only one of them attracted the particular attention of Gerald Genta, who famously designed the watch. In the second half of the 19th century the Royal Navy began building ships' hulls from various metals, because wood — and oak in particular, which was the strongest wood of all — was in extremely short supply. It was a futile endeavor. All the metals proved to be too heavy and the proud pillars of the Empire sank like stones. Eventually a design was developed that involved a steel frame and wooden planking. The result, in 1862, was the first British battleship, HMS Royal Oak. This floating fortress had octagonal gun ports in its hull that were secured by eight clearly visible bolts. This feature became one of the inspirations for the nowiconic design of the watch's bezel. These were among the first cases to be made with materials other than good old gold, steel and titanium, proving that Audemars Piguet was once again ahead of its time. This year, Audemars Piguet watches has raised the bar yet again with the forged-carbon Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team, launched at the SIHH watch fair in Geneva. Its total weight of just 100 grams is particularly impressive. While the Alinghi Team watch adds to Audemars Piguet's reputation for valuable limited editions, the standard Offshore Chronograph watches continues to represent the heart of this line — the solid rock on which the rest are situated. The model we tested, with titanium case and titanium bracelet, can be found at most well- stocked watch retailers. At 44 mm in diameter and 14.4 mm thick, this watch has a familiar, striking appearance created by its octagonal bezel with hexagonal bolts. Its instant recognizability, even at a distance, is what makes the Royal Oak Offshore watches such a popular favorite. However, an Offshore is much more than a status symbol. It is also a highly reliable watch, combining everyday utility with timekeeping prestige and long-lasting value. In terms of finishing, the only fault we could find was the sharp edge of the double-folding clasp, an odd contrast with the overall "soft" character of the case and bracelet. The case, with its multitude of polished edges and faces, fascinates, as does the titanium bracelet, which hugs the wrist. The gaps between the links have been made as small as possible to avoid hairs getting caught and unpleasant pinching caused by the watch's constant slight movements. Caged Combo Caliber The strong contrast between the white hands and the black dial makes it fairly easy to read the time, even in the dark: Audemars Piguet has applied just the right amount of Super-LumiNova to the hands and figures. However, in overly bright, dazzling lighting, the dial shines and reflects too much because the thick crystal is not coated. It is a small problem, which Audemars Piguet could easily rectify. The quality of coated sapphire glass, often criticized in the past for its susceptibility to scratches, is now much improved. The dial design is now a part of the Offshore's identity, with the typical wafer pattern and large numbers being as integral to it as the shape of the hour and minute hands. In our opinion, the latter hand could be just a bit longer, because it does not reach the minute indices on the flange. These indices also mark the tachymeter scale and the fractions of a second, and a longer minute hand would help to read the stopped times off the chronograph accurately. The watch's instructions state, "With its chronograph your watch measures accurately down to one eighth of a second as well as recording the hours and minutes." How this is possible, given that the divisions on the flange are in 1/5 seconds rather than 1/8 seconds, is not apparent. These scale markings, which are essential for a chronograph, should be redrawn and adjusted to match the number of beats of the watch movement. The rubber-covered chronograph push-pieces and the partly rubber-covered winding and adjusting crown are attractive and the three elements echo the look of the massive rubber seal fitted between the bezel and case. "The watch's design incorporates suggestions submitted by 125 testers, who were invited to purchase pre-series specimens of the new watch at a specially reduced price. The Tangente Date Power Reserve is Nomo's top of the line model and sells for $2,900. That's an inarguably low price for a watch with an exclusive mechanism, although it also constitutes a fairly hefty surcharge compared to the Tangente Date, which retails for $1,900. We prefer the Nomos Tangente Date without power reserve because it embodies the most uncompromising design. On the other hand, the version with power-reserve display offers its owner a fine example of unique technology in a very elegant package. Weighing just 36 grams (including its shell cordovan strap), this ticking featherweight is one of the lightest watches available and is correspondingly pleasant to wear. Like Nomos, D. Dornbluth & Sohn is based in eastern Germany. But the Dornbluths aren't from the watchmaking Mecca of Glashutte. They're from the town of Kalbe in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Their Up and Down with power-reserve display has a symmetrically arranged dial in the style of deck watches. Caliber 99.2 is the only known example in a wristwatch of power-reserve display that uses a transmission-wheel differential. The movement is based on the gear train from a Unitas 6497, but the original caliber has been so thoroughly reworked that not much remains unchanged. Dirk and Dieter Dornbluth invested an enormous amount of handcraftsmanship in their watch, equipping it with all the horological refinements of classic Glashutte calibers. These details include a three-quarter plate, swan's neck fine adjustment, hand-engraved balance cock, blued screws, and screwed gold settings. Even the ratchet wheel and transmission wheel have been adorned with sun-pattern engraving. The transmission wheel (a.k.a. "crown-wheel" because it uses crown toothing to transfer the direction of rotation from the winding stem to the plane of the gear train when the watch is wound) also propels the visible wheel of Dombluth's differential. On the other side, it cannot directly mesh with the teeth on the barrel because the winding stem is interposed between the two. But because the barrel is directly connected to the cannon pinion, the latter can serve as a second wheel to propel the gear train. However, an intermediate wheel is needed to reverse the direction of rotation. The Dornbluths successfully integrated their 2.98-mm-tall differential into the hand-wound movement. The movement's height had to be increased slightly: 0.3 mm, to be exact. The Dornbluths manually cut the almost microscopically small gears for the power-reserve watch display. They perform this exacting work on an old gear-cutting machine that lets them individually mill each tooth, or rather each tooth space (i.e. the interstice between two adjacent teeth) into a brass disk. The Dornbluths use meticulous handcraftsmanship instead of costly, fully automated machinery to craft many other components as well, thus achieving an unusually large depth of production. For example, they lathe-turn their screwed settings from gold wire, then hand-polish the resulting components. Like the power-reserve watch display in the Nomos watch, that of the Ul-ysse I from Ulysse Nardin makes do without a differential. Like the tortoise and the hare in Aesop's fable, the scale and the hand on the power-reserve watch display compete with one another in a never-ending race. Both components rotate in the same direction. When the watch is wound, the scale rotates

counterclockwise. As the mainspring gradually runs down, the hand follows the scale. As long ago as 1912, this manufacture constructed a pocket watch with a power-reserve watch display that used a rotating scale. The Ulysse I is a self-winding watch in which the barrel arbor continues to turn even after the mainspring has been fully tightened. Hence, it needs a stopper to prevent the hand from running off the scale after the mainspring is fully wound. It also needs a slide

coupling to prevent the wheels from jamming when the stopper is activated. Caliber UN-27 is based on an ETA 2892, onto which Ulysse Nar-din's watchmakers added a module for the power reserve watch and small seconds subdial. Design and assembly both take place in Ulysse Nardin's ateliers. The module is 1.25 mm thick, so the date disk lies rather deep below the plane of the dial. Ulysse Nardin added a magnifying lens above the date window, but this built-in loupe doesn't entirely solve the problem because the date is often obscured by a shadow. In all other details, however, the dial, with its symmetrical arrangement and its ample subdial for the seconds, is quite successful. The metallic bronze color watch and the unusual typeface used for the hour numerals give them a rather extravagant, almost expressionistic appearance. They're a good match for the case, which is available only in pink gold. The terraced lugs have a surprising shape that makes the case look a bit like an ancient Egyptian scarab. The crown, which bears the blue, anchor-shaped, Ulysse Nardin logo, is beautifully made, too, as is the little satin-finished metal plaque with the serial number on the opposite side of the case's rim. The movement, which COSC has officially certified as a chronometer, is hidden beneath a massive engraved metal back. The crocodile-skin strap is very beautifully crafted, with perfect reptilian scales and an attractive gleam. Incidentally, the straps on the Ulysse I and on the Zenith wristwatch are the only ones in this "Advice for Purchasers" article that are hand-sewn with saddle stitches. The word "handmade" appears on some of the other watches' straps, but that doesn't change the facts. All in all, the Ulysse I is an exotic wristwatch with a power-reserve display that's every bit as mysterious as the rest of the timepiece, which sells for ime between windings really benefits from having a power-reserve display. After all, one cannot always recall whether it's been five or six days since one last wound one's watch. The reserve is especially long-lasting in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande Reserve watch. The circular window in the back leaves plenty of room in the upper half of the back for a personalized engraving, e.g. the owner's initials. When fully wound, the little window shows the word "UP." This is followed by the digit "8." The numeral "1" appears seven days later. The " 1" isn't black like all the other digits, but is printed in red to remind the wearer that the wristwatch needs manual winding. From a technical point of view, a planetary-wheel differential converts the power-reserve display into a forward/backward motion. The device makes do without a reduction because instead of a hand, a wheel with a switching cam is affixed to the gear train. Each time the wheel turns, it advances the disk (printed with the digits) by one increment. A spring snaps into place after each advance, holding the disk securely in each of its 10 positions until the next incremental advance. As in a selfwinding watch, a click ensures that the display doesn't rotate beyond the "UP" position, while slide couplings in both barrels simultaneously prevent the winding from jamming. The bottom line: here's a marathon-running manufacture movement with an unusual and useful complication, encased inside a design icon. And $6,800 is by no means an exorbitant price to pay for such a fine-quality wristwatch. Seven years after the debut of the first Reverso, Panerai delivered its first Radiomir to the Italian Navy. The year was 1938. Nearly seven decades later, Panerai ranks among the hottest sport-watch brands. The new Radiomir 8 Days, which became available in September 2004, is certain to turn up the heat still further. On the one hand, it sports the appealing Radiomir attributes: a clearly legible dial with a small seconds subdial at the "9" and a cushion-shaped case with stirrups to attach the strap. On the other hand, this watch packs a powerful punch beneath its dial. This movement isn't based on the caliber used in the Reverso Grande Reserve, but on the one encased inside the Master Eight Days, which is augmented to include a big-date display and a day-night indicator. The Master Eight Days shows the remaining power reserve on its dial, but the differential with its planetary gear train is situated on the backside, so the shaft for the hand could also be shifted toward the rear. That's an ingenious solution, which not only helped this successful brand design a unique complication, but also led to the creation of an exclusive and high-status movement. And UK law enforcement bodies have also made it clear that the only proven link with terrorism is the sale of fake cigarettes and other counterfeit goods by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland. 'Crime and criminality' The survey of 2,000 people warned the "social acceptability of fake goods is a deeply concerning shift in consumer behaviour". I'm on the new side here and had a little confusion on the 21J movements. Does anyone have a handle on the newer 21J 28,800 VPH movement? Is it more reliable than the older 21J 21,6000 VPH? Do they appear to be significantly improving the quality of the 21J movements or are they just on a flatline as far as marginal quality?
